Another Crack at (in) H1N1...

What Should you do??????

I struggled a little with writing on this subject again since this Blog is about Faith and / or Fiction. (Hopefully about subjects that will encourage you to build your faith, or read good uplifting fiction.) So at first I thought that H1N1 wasn’t an entirely appropriate subject, (even though many people have asked me what I think, and what, if any precautions I’ve taken, both personally as well as for my family).

That is I thought it might not be appropriate until I saw this:

Clearly H1N1 coverage falls under the “fiction” category and I don’t think it will be too hard to make the leap to the “faith” category.

Since I decided to take another crack at this topic I’ve had many (many) discussions with people about this topic, most of whom are really scared and / or perplexed about what to do.

If you click on the above link you’ll see that the reporting of H1N1 has certainly outpaced the actual epidemic – at least according to CBS. So there are a couple (we’ll just call it 2 for now) of topics to consider. First, if this is true, why is it occurring? Why would the national media, arguably in conjunction with the government, do such a thing? The second (and undoubtedly more important) question is, what should you do?

Well let’s take a crack at the first question – uh 1st. Why would the incidence / occurrence / frequency / rate of H1N1 be exaggerated? I think there are two main schools of thought.

School #1 – It’s better to be safe than sorry. The more people who are aware of the danger, the more likely they are to take the proper precautions to prevent an infection…. If you follow this line of reasoning to its logical (or absurd – depending on your view) conclusion then it makes sense that the President would declare H1N1 a National Emergency – thereby authorizing certain Federal Agencies to combat the pandemic with additional powers as well as garnering more attention to the overall issue.

School #2 – There is something sinister about all this? Courses that you could attend in this School of thought include:

1 – Big Bad Pharma (BBP) is trying to maximize its profits on a vaccine at your expense.

2 – The Government is in cahoots with BBP (very similar to #1 but with a slight twist of government involvement or at least collusion)

3 – The entire New World Order is in cahoots to vaccinate you in an attempt to rob you of your money and freedom.

All right – if you read all that you’ll undoubtedly understand this subject’s link to the Fiction portion of this Blog. But what about the Faith part?

For a while I felt kind of smug going around telling people how this whole thing was a fabricated over-reaction, and how they shouldn’t get the vaccine, and shouldn’t worry about the flu etc, etc, etc….

Well as usually happens when I am feeling smug – I came face to face with a bit of reality – (and realized I needed to re-think a few things - never a pleasant occurence). I talked to a friend recently who was truly, genuinely, concerned about what to do. Of course I gave him my stock answer…"I wouldn’t get that vaccine, or give it to my kids…blah, blah, blah.” When he thoughtfully replied that his child was in a very high-risk category for the flu – severe asthma – I quickly realized that I should probably shut-up until I’d thought a little further about the subject.

So here are my current thoughts. I still (personally) have no intention of getting the vaccine or allowing anyone to administer it to my children.

But – if you are – or have children who are in a “high-risk” category, and feel (conflicted) but nonetheless compelled to have the vaccine administered to your children for their protection, might I offer this advice.

This is exactly what I did with my youngest daughter prior to all of her vaccinations (this was at a time prior to the formulation of my current views on the subject, but nonetheless, this is exactly what I would do now if I felt compelled to have my children vacinated.)

I laid my hands on my daughter and said this prayer over her,

“Father I ask you to make this vaccine work perfectly, and protect her from any sickness or disease that may attack her. I also cover her with the blood of Jesus for protection and ask you to make sure absolutely no harm comes upon her as a result of this vaccination. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

After that I took her into the Doctor and experienced the same joy that many of you have experienced during yearly vaccination time…..

Well regardless of which School of Thought you decide to attend (or you might just decide school is not for you), and whether you believe the “Fiction" portion of this post – I do hope that the “Faith” portion offers you, not only hope, but some practical advice for dealing with both the H1N1 situation, as well as any other vaccine or medical related situations you encounter.
