Christian Fiction...

Does it Matter?

A conversation with a friend the other day ……

Why do you write books?”

“Because God told me to.” I said, relating the first thing that popped into my head.

“He specifically told you to write books?” He asked skeptically.

“Well yeah….kind of…”

“Why? Do you really think God cares if you write a book?”

So I won’t relay the whole conversation and how I described my beliefs about God’s personal love, and care for each of us, and what we do…..but the conversation did make me think about writing books. Specifically Christian fiction – since that’s my genre.

Are they at all helpful to the Kingdom of God, and if so how? I knew that I definitely believed they were helpful (at least good ones), but I thought it was worth thinking about why, or perhaps how they were helpful.

Think about this for a moment…..

The Bible says that the Kingdom of God suffers violence, but the violent take it by force. (Mt11)

It also says that whoever cannot receive the Kingdom as a little child cannot enter in. (Mk 10)

So which is it? Do we take the Kingdom by force? Or do we enter in as a child?

Well of course both are true – even though they seem somewhat contradictory and in tension.

The answer likely lies in the lesson the Lord is trying to teach us.

There are some things we will never have until we exercise our authority as a believer. And until we learn who we are in Christ, what the Bible says we can have, what the Bible says we can do, and the authority and anointing on our life as a child of God, there are aspects of the Kingdom we will never experience, and ground that we will never take from the enemy.

(You might want to read that paragraph a couple more times slowly. I think it's important.)

Likewise – there are times that the only way we will ever enter into new realms is if we just receive from God as a child. The lesson here is not one of our authority in Christ, but rather our identity as an heir; and the fact that we have an inheritance, and that it can’t be received by any work. An inheritance doesn’t come to us because we deserve it rather it comes because it is given to us.

The link between these somewhat tenuous positions however is faith. Faith is often violent as we exercise our authority, beat back the attacks of the enemy, and take ground for the Kingdom by force. Faith can also be quiet, as we sit back and receive our inheritance from Abba Father, from Daddy.

So where does Christian fiction come into the picture?

Good Christian fiction, defined as a story that helps build one’s faith, fits easily into this picture. For so many, the realities of this physical world, and our physical experiences, have long ago become the defining boundaries of any spiritual experience we could ever hope for.

Though we read about what happened in the Bible, the stories are so far from our own frame of reference and experience, that we find it easier to explain why they wouldn’t, or shouldn’t happen today, than we do to actually try and believe that they could or should happen today.

It is in this shadowy area of doubt, theology, rationalization, and hope that good, faith-building fiction can become a bridge between reality and possibility.

If we read about miracles in a non-fiction, or doctrinal book, we really have two choices. We can accept the doctrine and force it to fit into our own lexicon of faith and experience, or we can reject it as misrepresentation or misunderstanding at best, or heresy at worst.

Fiction on the other hand forces no such predicament. One can read about miraculous incidents that a character experiences and instead of being forced to accept or reject, we can allow it to build in our mind and spirit until perhaps we long for a similar experience. So often this longing can mix with the Word of God, cause faith to well up and lead to an experience of the miraculous, a divine encounter if you will.

On a personal level, I remember years ago when I first read Frank Peretti’s books: This Present Darkness, and Piercing the Darkness. I know the spiritual reality they awakened within me has never gone back to sleep. On the contrary, I allowed the possibility with which those stories presented me to drive me toward a journey of seeking both a closer relationship with God, as well as a more tangible experience with Him than I had experienced up to that point in my life.

So why does God gift men and women to write fiction for the body of Christ? Perhaps for the same reason he gifts men and women to do anything. In order to build faith in his people, thus enabling them to further enter into His Kingdom, and ultimately of course, because He loves us.

Never forget Jesus’ great question in Luke 18:8:

Nevertheless, when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?

I wonder….

The Prince of Vampires…..
Have you been bitten?

Who is he anyway?

How big is the vampire business? It’s a bona fide cultural phenomenon. Novelist Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series, about the vampire Edward Cullen, has sold 42 million copies since 2005, while the film version has grossed more than $382 million since its release last fall. The HBO vampire series True Blood, based on Charlaine Harris’ best-selling Southern Vampire Mysteries, is one of cable’s biggest hits; sales of first-season DVDs led all other TV titles this summer. Harris’ latest entry, Dead and Gone, debuted in May at the top of the New York Times best-seller list. This fall will see the debut, on the CW network, of The Vampire Diaries, based on L.J. Smith’s young-adult novels. In Los Angeles last month, the first Vampire-Con featured panels, movie screenings, and costume contests attended by devotees wearing capes, white makeup, and plastic fangs. “The undead sure are lively,” says cultural critic Johanna Schneller. “Everywhere you look in entertainment these days, you see vampires.”

That’s the first paragraph of an article you can find here:

http://www.theweek.com/article/index/100059/Bitten_by_a_vampire

Here we go again….….

What in the world? If you read the article (which you can if you want – don’t necessarily recommend it though) you’ll also come across this little tidbit:

…the vampires that populate today’s fiction are far sexier than the musty castle-dwellers of yore. In Twilight and similar offerings, they typically have buff bodies and sharp clothes—and they can be found not just in Transylvania but right in your neighborhood.

Hmmm……right in your own neighborhood?

Oh, and one more morsel:

The tagline for the 1987 teen-vampire movie The Lost Boys says it all: “Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die. It’s fun to be a vampire.”

Fun to be a vampire? Are you kidding me? Are you serious? Are you totally nuts?

Ahhhh, and so we get to the crux of it…..So according to our pop culture Vampires are fun, sexy, good looking, buff, well dressed, and immortal.

Before we totally buy into that though, let’s look at a couple of different definitions for just a second . According to Popular Folklore the definition of a Vampire is: a corpse that rises at night to drink the blood of the living.

Wikipedia says: Vampires are mythological or folkloric beings who subsist by feeding on the life essence (generally in the form of blood) of living creatures.

Well…that sounds real fun now doesn’t it.

Guess what? The Bible recognizes the existence of vampires too. Did you know that?

Well maybe not exactly, but indirectly, and it has a different name for them. The Bible refers to these undead, immortal, blood sucking beings with the same terminology it refers to all immortal evil beings…..as ”devils,” or in some translations, “demons”. And, oh by the way, they fall under the authority of the Prince of Darkness the Devil himself.

Now lets think about this for just a moment. Most people would acknowledge that the Devil is bad. Most Christians are at least vaguely familiar with the concept that the Devil’s activities are: stealing, killing, and destroying. (Jn 10:10) What most people are not aware of (and most Christians it seems choose not to think about) is what the Apostle Paul told us in
Second Corinthians:

And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore [it is] no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works. 2 Cor 11:14-15

When you consider that the Devil and his ilk are quite adept at transforming themselves into “angels of light”, it now seems quite natural that demonic, satanic beings, (who for the sake of societal deception), are calling themselves “vampires”, and are carving out an ever bigger place in our mainstream society under the guise of entertainment.

So the question is not, are they harmful or just innocent entertainment? Rest assured they are harmful, they are evil. The question is, what effect has the mainstreaming of vampires and everything vampiric had on you and/or your family. (Surely you are not foolish enough to think you can engage with these beings on a “cultural / entertainment” level and not be effected.)

Well that’s it really, just a public service post to increase your level of awareness about a cultural phenom that’s out there and is harmful to you and yours.

So does a rant against vampires really make any difference? Were the five minutes you took to read this post just a waste of your time? Are they now “cosmically wasted minutes” that you’ll never get back?

Well that depends on you. If you read this and say, “Whatever…. vampires, what’s the big deal….” Then I would say you’ve wasted your time. If, on the other hand, you realize that the “mainstreaming of evil” is a tactic that the devil has used very effectively since the beginning of time against believers (as well as unsuspecting unbelievers) you may be inclined to take action that will undoubtedly save you trouble and suffering later.

What should you do? Well glad you asked. First and foremost you should realize the evil that Vampires and all thing “vampiric” truly represent. You should determine now, that no matter how popular they become in our culture, no matter how, good-looking, sexy, fun, beautiful, or sympathetic they seem, they are really just evil, evil, evil, and nothing more. Then you should do whatever you need to in order to keep their pervasive influence away from you and your family.

Why? Because the whole concept of the current vampire formula is first to intrigue, second to invade (your mind and soul), and third to instill fear. Why fear? Because a ‘spirit of fear’ is the key the devil always uses to access the life of a believer. (This is why the most frequently repeated command in the Bible is – “Do not fear.”)

Though it’s slightly funny….look at this recent exchange from
Yahoo answers:

Question:
Do vampires exist, does the Bible talk of vampires, are they fallen angels?

Best Answer - Chosen by Voters

Yes, they do exist. They're hiding in your basement in that dark corner by the freezer and are going to get you when you put the ice cream away. But if you run really fast up the steps they won’t get you.

(While you can read this post and think that’s kind of silly, wait until later on tonight, after everyone in your house goes to sleep, then go down and get the ice cream out of your basement freezer, in the dark, and tell me how you feel – Instilling a spirit of fear into believers is always number 1, 2, or 3 in the Devils play book)

So besides keeping this insidious, fear-causing, phenomena away from your family what else should you do?

Fill the void with something different. (This too is a Biblical principle – Mt 12:43-45) The most obvious alternative is the Word of God itself. After that it depends on your medium. If it’s TV or movies, check out the plethora of uplifting, clean, Christian TV and movie options that are becoming increasingly available. If it’s fiction (remember 42 million copies of the Twilight series have sold since 2006) then you’re in good shape. There are more Christian fiction titles available to day then ever before.

Interested in an uplifting, page-turning, keep-you-reading-all-night, Christian thriller?

Well you know what to do……The “order now” button is right up there on the right. And I’ll promise you this…. read The Second Trumpet and you won’t develop fear about vampires, or anything else for that matter. Rather, I pray you’ll develop a deeper faith in the power of God!

Pre-School or Home School……Hmmmmmmm

So the debate over Home Schooling versus Public Schooling (or I guess Private too) has obviously gone on for quite a while. I’m not sure I have a whole lot to add to the debate that hasn’t already been covered extensively by others, but I do have a…shall I say… disturbing observation to share.

Many of you reading this know that I have two daughters, ages 3 and 4 (almost 5) who both attend a Christian Pre-School. This year is the first year for my 3 year old, and the third year for my almost 5 year old.

That said, let me back up and say that one of the main arguments I’ve heard for sending kids to school, versus Home Schooling them is the social aspect. When kids go to school they learn how to interact with their peers, as well as other adults better, hence, they become better adjusted adults, etc., etc., etc….. I know this argument has probably been proven and disproven a thousand different times in a thousand different studies so I’m not going to offer any particular or additional evidence either for or against it.

I would like to share my observations and invite any of you who read this to share your insights and comments below.

After 3 weeks of attending Christian Pre-School for 3 days a week I was listening to my girls play together when I heard the 3 year old say something that I’ve never heard her say before.

“….let’s pretend we’re scaring people…” she told her sister.

Well I took the opportunity to share my rather extensive views on that particular idea with her, which I’m certain she no doubt appreciated.

A day or so later, I was pushing her on a “baby swing” – one with a little tray that snaps on in front of her - and as she was swinging she asked if she could play with two little plastic animals which were on the floor. I handed them to her and kept pushing her while she played with them. A few minutes later I confess I was slightly taken aback when my sweet baby said…

Daddy look, they’re killing each other…” as she made the cow step on top of the pig – (no that is not a commentary on beef vs. pork).

Well once again I took the opportunity to share my even more extensive views on her choice of activities for the little animals.

So where does all this leave me?

Well, wondering for one thing…. Are the “socialization” skills she’s gaining at her pre-school worth whatever other “skills” she’s gaining there? I’m quite sure she didn’t “learn” these new lessons from her teachers – on the contrary – she undoubtedly picked them up from some of her new classmates. But again, that’s the whole point.

So …… some of you are probably thinking that I’m a little over-paranoid / or over-concerned and that I should get over it. But my question is this – If she’s learning about scaring and killing in the 1st three weeks – what’s next?

And more importantly, as they say – do the benefits out-weigh the risks? So far, I must say, I don’t think so….

Let me know what you think.

God Bless,

LM

Shout Out for:

The Second Trumpet

I met Nancy "Honeytree" Miller at a Christian Writers Conference back on 2004 and got to spend some time talking, singing, and playing the guitar a little with her. (As well as shedding a few tears - turned out we'd both recently experienced some tough baby situations). Anyway, she was a very nice Christian Lady! It wasn't until later that I read her bio and found out that she was an A-List Christian Artist! Talking to her since, she's shared some pretty neat stories about the Contemporary Christian Music movement that she helped start back in the 1970s. Today she's still very involved in sharing the Good News of the Kingdom with people all over the world.

That said, she still found time to read, and apparently enjoy, The Second Trumpet.

I enjoyed reading “The Second Trumpet” tremendously. It’s a fast moving, grab-a-hold-of-you story. Larry does a great job of weaving intense spiritual experiences into real world scenarios. Well done!

Hell’s Scare II (Reprise)

Just a short re-visit to an earlier post.

My friend who sent me his original Top 10 ways to fix Health Care, (remember I added #11) recently sent me five more suggestions. This brings his total number of suggestions to 15, and I’ll stick by my addition and call it #16. So here is the original message he sent me one more time, plus his next 5, plus my 1. Just in case you’re interested…..

Larry,

I've been watching the debates on government health care. And as I watch I wonder how much health care we'd even need, government or personal, if the following became a reality in this country.

1. Every able-bodied person in the U.S. exercised for at least 15 minutes a day.

2. Exercise was a required subject in schools – from pre-school through graduate school.

3. Deep breathing exercises were taught to kids as well as adults - after all, 70% of toxins are eliminated through the breath.

4. Fluoride were removed from drinking water, along with all the other harmful chemicals wending their way to the faucet.

5. Shots with toxic mercury, aluminum, and cadmium were no longer given - many believe these potions have sky-rocketed autism and Alzheimers to record levels.

6. Cancer-causing pesticides and herbicides were no longer allowed to be sprayed on fruits and vegetables.

7. High fructose corn syrup was banned from all foods and beverages.

8. Genetically modified foods were outlawed.

9. MSG and other corn derivatives were no longer allowed to be added to foods.

10. All meat and dairy had to be grass-fed and hormone free.

Once again, if these simple ideas were followed,
the breadth and scope of health care needed in
this country would be minimized by such a huge
degree that there'd be no need for debate on
government health care whatsoever.

The above is only a snippet of what could be done to save trillions of dollars on future
health care costs. Naturally, I've narrowed this plan to 10 key points that you
can read fairly fast - as well as Google for accuracy.

(And here are his next 5)

My Health Care Plan - Part 2

If you've never heard of some of the things I'm
mentioning, feel free to Google and discover the
facts for yourself.

Like the first 10-points I sent you earlier,
I will be brief and to the point.

Once again, if these simple ideas were followed,
the breadth and scope of health care needed in
this country would be minimized by such a huge
degree that there'd be no need for debate on
government health care whatsoever.

11. Teach courses in school on how to live 100
years or more in great health.

12. Mandate removal of all carcinogens from tooth paste,
mouth wash, deodorants, soaps and shampoos.

13. Mandate removal of all carcinogenic chemicals from house
hold cleaners and laundry detergents.

14. Make it a felony for a pregnant woman to use 'recreational'
drugs.

15. Teach organic gardening on television as a free public service.

(and of course here is my original #11 – now #16)

#16 – Receive healing from God by faith for whatever currently afflicts you.

OK – undoubtedly many of you have practically decided to stop reading, but…..before you do…hold on just a minute and consider a couple of things. Do you know the statistics on people in this country who get sick and die? That’s right, in this country, they get sick, go to the doctor, hospital, take their medicine, and then die anyway. It’s a lot of people…

Now before I go further let me say clearly – I am not against doctors, medicine, modern allopathic, or osteopathic methods – I am not. (that’s obvious if you know me.)

I do believe there is another alternative available to people of faith. Why do I believe this? Because it’s in the Bible, both Testaments, Old and New. It’s part of the Gospel that Jesus proclaimed. It’s plain to see for anyone who wants to….

And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their Synagogues, preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness, and all kinds of diseases among the people. Mt 5:23

“Wait just a minute…” you say…”That was Jesus!” Well OK –

And the believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women, so that they brought the sick out into the streets and laid them on beds and couches, that at least the shadow of Peter passing by might fall on some of them. Also a multitude gathered from the surrounding cities to Jerusalem, bringing sick people and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed. Acts 5:14-16

“Yes, but those things were done in order to establish the Church,” You say, being the highly educated theologian that you are.

What about this…

Who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness – by whose stripes you were healed. 1 Pet 2:24

“But again, that speaks of spiritual healing,” you might say.

Well I won’t go on but read Mathew 8 and you can clearly see that the Holy Spirit says that this passage in 1 Peter and the passage that Peter quotes in Is 53 both refer specifically to physical healing.

“Well fine you say” – confounded by my apologetic – “if we’re healed by Jesus – then how come it doesn’t work all the time? I mean everyone knows people who have been prayed for who haven’t recovered. In fact,” you might say, “In my experience faith healings have a whole lot worse record than doctors.”

True, true, true. And I wouldn’t pretend to try and explain all of the reasons that some are not healed, or even claim to know all of the reasons (however I do know some).

That’s not really the place to start though. The place to start is with the will of God, and your faith. It’s been said many times, “Faith begins at the point the will of God is known.” This is very true, because until you are convinced that it is God’s will that you be healed, it will be impossible for you to have the faith to receive a healing from God.

How do you come to know God’s will? Through his Word! His word is his will….. and through the life of Jesus. The will of God for mankind is most clearly manifested and represented through the life of Jesus Christ on this earth.

So study his Word. Read it, meditate on it, get it inside of you. This not only teaches you his will, but it simultaneously grows your faith. (See Romans 10:17) I’ve already given you a few places to start, but here are a few more: Ex 15:26, Ps 91, Ps103:3, Is 53:5, Mt 8:2-3 (in fact a thorough study of Mathew 8 is probably essential).

Besides reading and meditating on Scripture is there anything you can do. Sure is – (I recommend doing it now while you’re well – rather than waiting until your sick) – you can stimulate your mind with the writings of others on the subject. Let me suggest just a few excellent ones:

Christ the Healer, by F.F. Bosworth

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_0_17?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=christ+the+healer+by+f.f.+bosworth&sprefix=christ+the+healer

God Wants You Healed, by Walt Straughan

http://wsmin.org/book5.htm

Finally, the biggest problem some people have is opening their minds to the concept of supernatural healing in the first place. For this, fiction is the answer because it doesn’t assault the mind. Ideas kind of come in the back door of your mind as you read fiction. The more you read the more amenable you become to the idea, at which point your ready for more serious study.

Here’s a great place to start if that’s where you find yourself (big surprise huh!)

The Second Trumpet, by Larry Miles

Click the link right over there to your right!

Now, remember the bottom line….regardless of whether the government ever does anything or not, and regardless of how effective they are…You can begin to implement these suggestions right away in your life at absolutely no cost – and I promise you your overall health will improve!

God Bless,

LM
